Senior programs aplenty at Norridge center

For about three decades the Adult Recreation Club at the Norridge Park District has been providing a place for seniors to get together to play cards, socialize and have special events.
Betty Ness of Norridge has been going to the club’s weekly pinochle card games and other events for about 22 years.
“Without the Norridge Park District, my social life would be terrible,” she said. “I have family, but that’s not my social life.”
For a small annual fee ($6 for Norridge residents and $11 for non-residents) members can play weekly pinochle, bridge and poker games on different days of the week, as well as go on discounted group trips and other special events.
The club was designed for seniors to have somewhere to go to have fun, to socialize and to meet new friends, said Julie Gersky of Norridge, the Adult Recreation Club coordinator.
“They laugh. They have fun. They entertain each other,” Gersky said. “Every single one of them has a story to tell.”
Additionally, each month police offer crime prevention talks with the seniors to teach them to avoid scams and to protect themselves against credit card fraud, Internet fraud and rouse burglaries among other things.
“We try to be repetitive because repetitive teaches them,” said Harwood Heights Police Cmdr. John DeVries.
The next crime prevention talk will be held Sept. 5 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Norridge Park District.
