HARWOOD HEIGHTS — Ten people were charged with various driving violations following two nights of road safety checks in Harwood Heights.
Officers, who set up the operation Aug. 17 and 24 at Lawrence and Harlem avenues, issued 98 tickets, said Lt. Frank Biagi.
The program, sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation, promotes safe driving awareness.
“We usually carry out these checks in advance of a holiday weekend,” Biagi said. “If 500 cars pass by on Harlem, those drivers tell three other people.
“Now we’ve made 1,500 people aware of the need to drive safely.”
Those issued violations include:
Thomas Conroy, 48, 1318 Castle Drive in Park Ridge was charged with driving under the influence after he reportedly registered a blood alcohol level of .104, which is over the legal limit of .08. Conroy received a recognizance bond and a Sept. 20 court date in Rolling Meadows.
Areli Ortiz, 19, 2611 N. Sayre Ave. in Chicago, was charged with driving while her license was suspended. Ortiz received a recognizance bond and a Sept. 17 court date in Rolling Meadows.
Jose Garcia-Campos, 48, 5150 W. Wellington Ave. in Chicago, was charged with driving without a valid license. He received a recognizance bond and a Sept. 20 court date in Rolling Meadows.
