The Youth Band of The Salvation Army Norridge Citadel will travel to Ohio to play two concerts in February.
“This will be the band’s first trip (under the leadership) of Martyn Thomas and his assistant Barbara Burtch,” stated Pamela Church-Pryor, community ministries director of the Salvation Army Norridge Citadel Corps and Community Center in a press release.
She wrote the idea for this trip came about last summer during the senior band’s London tour.
Thomas, who has served 10 years as leader of the Youth Band met a member of the Salvation Army’s New York Staff Band, who suggested Thomas bring the youth band to Ohio for a concert.
Made up of junior and senior soldier members, The Salvation Army’s 17-member Youth Band range in age from nine to 19.
Seven player/chaperones will be added for the trip, according to Church-Pryor.
“Most of the kids going on the band trip live in the area but may or may not live in the Norridge area, ” Church-Pryor said. “The kids from our after-school program and our character building programs feed into the youth band and attend rehearsals on Wednesday evenings, but are not proficient enough yet or have not made the commitment to the Youth Band as yet, but are heading in that direction.”
A lot of the youth band members over the years have moved into the Norridge Citadel’s 40-piece senior band.
The trip is scheduled Feb. 17 -19 with two concerts.
While in Ohio, the youth band will rehearse with the youth musicians from the Salvation Army’s Swoneky division and will then perform a Feb. 18 concert at the Salvation Army Chapel at Worthington Woods, near Columbus.
The band will also lead a worship service at the Middletown, Ohio, corps on Feb. 19.
