Maine South High School in Park Ridge was recently notified by the Cook County Department of Public Health that cases of whooping cough and chicken pox had been reported within the school.
The Health Department informed the school on Jan. 18 that a student was recently diagnosed with pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough.
This was the first case of whooping cough reported at Maine South this school year and the second in the district.
The last case was reported at Maine West High School in Des Plaines in December.
Four cases of whooping cough were reported during the months of November and December in Park Ridge-Niles School District 64.
On Jan. 23 Maine South officials learned that a student had been diagnosed with chicken pox, also known as varicella.
The grades of both students were not included in the notices sent from the Cook County Department of Public Health.
Maine South has posted the Health Department’s notices on its website, south.maine207.org.
