Heat advisory issued as record-breaking heat approaches

A heat advisory has been issued for Wednesday as triple-digit temperatures are expected to move back into the area.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a heat advisory for northern Illinois and northwest Indiana from 11 a.m. through 10 p.m. Wednesday. An advisory means hot and humid weather could cause illness.

Temperatures are expected to reach 100 to 104 degrees Wednesday with a heat index between 105 and 110 degrees, the weather service said. The record high for July 25 is 101 degrees in 1940.

Meteorologists are predicting a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms Wednesday night and Thursday, and temperatures are expected to be in the low- to mid-80s the remainder of the week.

The weather service advises people to avoid working outside during the hottest parts of the day Wednesday; wear loose, lightweight clothing; and drink plenty of water.
