HARWOOD HEIGHTS — A B. Makowsky handbag, still with its tags, is selling for $160 less than retail price. A pair of Versace sunglasses, list price of $210, is going for $45.
Those are just two examples of bargains available at Clothes Mentor, 4850 N. Harlem Ave. in Harwood Heights.
The resale shop, which opened in May, offers higher-end clothing and accessories at prices around 70 percent less than retail, District Manager Tina Donaldson said.
Marketing and demographics surveys show the Harwood Heights area is home to many working women between the ages of 25 and 60, Store Manager Kyle Mellow said.
“There’s not a lot of stores like this around here,” he said.
The Harwood Heights store relocated from Glendale Heights to reach more customers, Donaldson said.
“It’s good for women starting out their careers, women who are established,” she said. “Women who know a good deal.”
One could spend hours going through the store’s inventory. Shelves of shoes are everywhere. Row upon row of jeans occupy one area of the store while tops and jackets have their own space.
Jewelry and handbags round out the options.
Among those options are an array of Coach bags, with prices ranging from $25-$110, depending on the size. At retail, they would sell for between $108 and $308, Mellow said.
“Even higher for Legacy bags,” he added. “You can spend an entire day in the store.
“You’ll find just about anything under this one roof.”
In addition to handpicking items from a variety of sources, the store buys newer label goods from customers — cash on the spot, no consignment.
“We accept items from customers all day, and it doesn’t matter what season,“ Donaldson said. “Why hang onto something the entire year just because it’s out of season?
“If it’s a good buy, it’s something we buy all year long.”
The shop also stocks maternity clothing and items such as diaper bags, Mellow said.
Clothes Mentor has special deals and exclusive sales for customers who sign up on Facebook or for the store’s email club, Donaldson added.
