The Ridgewood boys basketball team went into its match-up against Fenton on Feb. 3 with thoughts of sweeping the season series from its Metro Suburban Conference rivals.
The Rebels were able to do just that, beating the Bison 83-62 in Bensenville, thus sweeping the season series and improving to 14-6 on the season and 6-1 in conference play. Pete Mroz led the way for the Rebels with 41 points, including a school record 10 three-pointers.
“He had a great game. He only shot it 15 times,” said head coach Chris Mroz, regarding Pete, who went 11-for-15 from the field. “He was in rhythm and he led us throughout the whole game.”
Prior to the Fenton game, the Rebels took a break from MS Conference play and took on Argo on Jan. 31. In that game, the Rebels won 77-53. Pete Mroz led the way once again with 24 points and Anthony Mroz chipped in 11. Andy Mazurczak did not score, but he was a factor on the offensive end according to coach Mroz.
“He did whatever he wanted (in) getting in position to set guys up for baskets,” said Mroz.
“We started off sluggish, then we turned it up in the second half with our defensive pressure and it got to them in the second half.”
Now with only a handful of games remaining in the regular season, Mroz is pleased with his team’s performance, but knows there is still work to be done in order to reach the team goals for the season.
“(The season) is going pretty well,” said Mroz. “Our goal is to win 20 games and we’ve got a chance to get there. We also want to give ourselves a chance to be conference champions and with two wins (against Illiana and Timothy Christian this week) would make us 8-1 (in conference) and that would give us a chance at the championship.”
