Baseball: Stellar season ends for Oakton in Region IV final

A stellar 2012 season came to a close for Oakton with a 7-4 loss to host Madison (Wis.) College during the NJCAA Division II Region IV championship game on Sunday.

The Raiders, who reached the title game of the double-elimination tournament with a 13-6 win over Black Hawk College on Saturday, finished with a school-record 43 wins, with 19 losses.

Oakton began tourney play with a 3-2 loss to Madison on Friday, but bounced back to crush Kankakee 9-1 on Saturday, before returning later in the day to blow away Black Hawk.

Five Raiders were selected to the 2012 NJCAA Division II All-North Central Region IV squad, including first-team picks Ryan Tuntland (Maine West), Brett Synek (Glenbrook North), Ty Palmer (Wayne County, Ga.) and Derek De Young (Plainfield). Troy Mannebach (Appleton, Wis.) made the second team.

Men’s track

Competing in the NJCAA Division I Outdoor National Championships, held at South Plains College (Texas) on May 16, Oakton’s 3,200-meter relay team of Todd Brady (Notre Dame), Haider Sheikh (Maine West), Kenny Alferes (Maine West) and Martin Chavez (Maine West) finished 14th in 8:05.92.

Chavez placed 18th in the 800, finishing in 1:57.64.
