Boys Volleyball: Glenbrook North’s Luke Jacobson: Player of the Year

On a team with so many talented players, it’s hard to distinguish one from another.
Luke Jacobson was able to stand out on Glenbrook North because of his all-around efforts. The senior middle hitter played all rotations and helped the Spartans take second place in the state, the program’s best finish since 2004. Glenbrook North lost to Wheaton Warrenville South in the state final, the Spartans’ third loss of the season to perhaps the country’s best team.
“He was equally dominant in the front row and back row,” Spartans coach Chris Cooper said.
Jacobson worked in the offseason to make himself a better player. It showed this year.
“Last year, I was not great on the back row, but I knew I could improve,” Jacobson said. “I really feel like I mastered both the front and back row this year. I was definitely a more all-around player this year.”
Jacobson finished with 234 kills, 132 digs, 51 blocks and 27 aces for the Spartans, who went 38-4.
“It was a completely satisfying season,” he said. “Very few teams can do what we did. We have nothing to be ashamed about finishing second in state to Wheaton Warrenville South. They had an amazing team. I will have these memories the rest of my life.”
Jacobson will join Kyle and Pat Bedford at Miami (Ohio) this fall. None of the former Spartans plans to play volleyball in college.
But Jacobson said he might consider trying out for the basketball team as a sophomore.
“It’s a far-fetched dream, but I really missed playing,” he said. “I am thinking if I can get back into basketball shape and my skills are there, why not give it a shot for the heck of it?”
